Fargo, ND (AgNews890.com) – On Monday’s “Farm Talk” program Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak gave an update on several important topics, including trade negotiations with China. She also talked about looking for new markets for North Dakota products.

I asked Rep. Fedorchak if she gets updates from the USTR and the Trump Administration:

Fedorchak: I absolutely do. I feel like I have the USTR on speed dial. We’ve been uh in touch with them a lot. We’ve also created some venues for them to hear directly from our farm organization leaders and producers. So they are hearing like we’re in a tough spot right now. We’ve got to finish up these deals with our biggest buyer of on soybeans, China, and then also even more importantly, I think, double down on opening up new markets. So, yeah, they know the urgency of the situation. And so we’re working that angle with them, but also well aware of the fact that it’s getting late. So our farmers need solutions and they need some certainty now as they enter harvest and are looking at a bumper crop.
We also talked about new trade opportunities for North Dakota Agricultural products:

Fedorchak:  So there’s some exciting new opportunities. Taiwan just announced last week that the announcement in Washington, D.C. that they’re going to increase their agriculture purchases by 25 percent. And that’s soybeans, wheat, corn and beef. All great things that North Dakota produces.  That’s just one example, I think there’s opportunities and other east Asian countries like Vietnam.  There’s also great opportunity in Africa and in the UK. We need to double down on the domestic use too with the crushing facilities. I’ve talked to some farmers who are sending a good portion of their production this year to the crushing facilities. That’s great. We need to do more of that, biofuels and oils area. so yeah, lots of, we need to come at it from every possible angle.
