(NAFB.com) – U.S. Wheat Associates and the National Association of Wheat Growers sent a letter encouraging the government to reopen rail crossings between the U.S. and Mexico. The letter asks the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to reopen the crossings at El Paso and Eagle Point as quickly as possible. Given the huge volume of U.S. wheat sales, with an average annual commercial sales of almost 132 million bushels, a substantial volume of U.S. wheat is shipped every year by rail. And it’s estimated that at least 13 million bushels of wheat worth over $114 million per year move through the closed rail corridors. The wheat groups understand that the Customs agency has significant challenges given the border situation, but a supply chain crisis in Mexico can and should be avoided. Mexico uses rail to import American wheat from as far away as the Northern Plains and loaded trains are waiting to move.
