VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.Com) – The “Party in the Dirt” is back this Saturday night at the North Dakota Winter Show in Valley City.
The concert took a hiatus last year because of the pandemic, but is back with a vengeance this year with singer songwriter Tim Montana. To know what you can expect this Saturday night in Valley City, is to know the backstory of one of the country’s best live acts.
Tim Montana was born and raised in Flathead Valley region of Montana, and grew up “off the grid”. Montana said, “We had a single-wide trailer house, a generator we would start on Sundays. Otherwise it was lanterns and candles Monday through Saturday.” No television in the Montana home. Montana said at the age of five or six he had a “lantern and a little nylon string guitar” to keep himself entertained. It was there that he started to build his love for music.
That love for music continued to grow throughout his childhood into his teenage years. It was both country and rock music that he was influenced by. Montana said, “I found a tape, a Guns and Roses tape, it was “Welcome to the Jungle” on one side, and “Mr. Brownstone” on the other. At that same time, my Mom smoked enough Marlboros (cigarettes) to have Marlboro Country tape.” Montana says he still feels that those two contrasting styles are still influencing his sound to this day.
Eventually, he ended up in Nashville, where he formed his band the Shrednecks and established himself as a thrilling live performer. He’s a big personality and struck up friendships with such diverse figures as Kid Rock and the Navy SEAL who led the raid to take down Osama bin Laden, Rob O’Neill.
But it’s ZZ Top’s legendary Billy Gibbons with whom Montana has formed his longest and most prosperous relationship. The pair has written, recorded and performed together countless times, co-writing songs like “Weed and Whiskey,” “Rust and Red” and “Fifty Fifty.” In 2013, they wrote “This Beard Came Here to Party,” which became the theme song of the Boston Red Sox as they fought to a World Series championship.
